Design of a CMOS LC VCO with Wide Tuning Range and Low Phase Noise

  • A CMOS LC voltage-controlled oscillator(VCO)with 830MHz tuning range is presented.An improved binary weighted array of switched capacitor is used to enlarge tuning range.The technique of programmable bias current is used to stabilize the amplitude of oscillation signal across the whole tuning range.The VCO has a wide tuning range from 1.12~1.95GHz with a power dissipation of 6.5~19.1mW.The simulated phase noise is-122dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset 1.1GHz and-120dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset 1.9GHz.The chip area is 360μm×830μm in 0.35μm CMOS RF technology.
