The state-of-the-art research for time-sensitive network and future research interests

  • Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) is a new generation deterministic network technology for the coexistence of the information and operation technology, which targeted to Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), industrial automation, in-vehicle networks and aerospace electronic system networks. Time-Sensitive Networking based on standard Ethernet provides time-critical traffics with deterministic transmission services through extending capabilities of time synchronization, time-aware flow scheduling and seamless flow redundancy transmission, which enable real-time traffics and non-real-time traffics transmission can share the same network. In this paper, we firstly introduce the development history and background of TSN. Secondly, we survey the research state-of-the-art of TSN, focusing on their research topics. This survey covers three research areas: TSN core function, including time synchronization, traffic scheduling shapers, network resource management and configuration, flow reliability, TSN simulator/framework, and TSN use case study. Finally, through the analysis of these research in the three areas, research challenges and potential research directions are discussed to break the limits of TSN for real-world deployment.
